When you look at your schedule/calendar from last week…
What gave you energy?
What drained you?
“How we spend our days, is how we spend our lives?” - Annie Dillard
DRAINING
Did you go out to dinner when you really didn’t want to?
Did you take on a project because you felt like you couldn’t say no?
Did you have a conversation with a hypochondriacal relative for the 702nd time?
ENERGIZING
Did you spend time on the phone helping someone navigate an interview process and loved every minute of it?
Did you try a new recipe and didn’t even realize 2 hours flew by?
Did you spend an evening with a new running group and ended up meeting some cool people?
How can we add more energizing things and lessen the draining ones?
First, we have to be aware that it is even happening. It can be super easy to get caught up on autopilot living.
SOME SUGGESTIONS:
set a reminder/alarm to reflect on this question every Sunday morning (with coffee of course)
write “what’s giving me energy” on the bathroom mirror (I love using dry erase markers on mirrors) to keep it front of mind.
check in and discuss with an energizing friend each week (having an accountability partner is always nice).
Hearing Ali Abdaal talk about this definitely served as a reminder for me.
I know everything can’t be sunshine, unicorns, and coffee all day but if I can stop some draining things that I am allowing, I need to do so.
Yet again, I am reminded of the Gary Vaynerchuk quote:
“Stop acting like you live twice!”

I needed this today. I did something that drained me yesterday
That I regret today.
