7 LESSONS FROM LAWRENCE MCMULLIN
Lawrence McMullin was not my biological father but he was the man who raised me from first grade on.
Our relationship was terrible but he was definitely a master teacher.
One of the things he taught me was golf. And since this is The Masters weekend….
give a FIRM HANDSHAKE - this was a must. I’ve always done this and taught it to kids I worked with. To this day, people (mostly men) still say: nice handshake!
LOOK PEOPLE IN THE EYE when having a conversation - he sais it shows respect.
EDUCATION IS A MUST and it will take you anywhere! Period! He did not let up on this.
He could not read or write - his signature was a wiggly line kinda like an ‘L’ but that was not going to be my story on his watch.
Summers were spent reading Roots and learning my ‘time tables’“The first thing people look at when they see you are YOUR SHOES” - keep them clean and looking nice.
DO IT RIGHT or do it over - his method of teaching this was crazy but I learned the lesson.
For instance, if one dish wasn’t fully cleaned, I had to wash ALL the dishes over again. Arrrgggghhhh! Lesson learned though. If you don’t know, FIND THE ANSWER(s) - If I asked him a question he made me look it up, write a report, and then present to him.
I used the encyclopedia, dictionaries, etc…. All available in the home I grew up in.
Who knows how long that payment plan was for that set of encyclopedias!ALWAYS keep your eye on the ball - This was a constant golf lesson but also a great life lesson - pay attention and STAY FOCUSED!
THAT’S IT Y’ALL - see ya here next Sunday at 3p CT -
