THE BLACK LIST
*3 books by Black authors that I completely enjoyed
Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams - I don’t read much fiction but every now and again, I will.
This was a bookclub book for me - part of the reason I joined a bookclub was to push myself to read outside of what I normally pick up.
“Meet Queenie Jenkins: Journalist. Catastrophist. Expressive. Aggressive. Dramatic. Loved. Lonely. Relatable.” - front flap description
If you want something to pick up for a summer vacation or to take your mind off your ‘to do list’, this is a good one.
some words I had to look up while reading Queenie:
faffing
kala
droll
Do you look up words when reading or do you just try to pull from context?
Will by Will Smith with Mark Manson - I know. I know. BUT. I read this book beforehand and because of that, I felt like I had a different view of things.
I personally think he was wrong for what he did - The book makes me feel like I understand how he got to that place. Still wrong, but I understand.
Will chose to write this book after his father passed away. I respect that decision. I 100% understand that having grown up in an abusive home as well.
The book was GOOD! Period.
“We concoct entire narratives about other people’s lives when in fact we have no clue what they’re thinking or feeling or struggling with.” - page 29
Illustrated Black History: Honoring The Iconic And The Unseen by George McCalman
“Illustrated Black History ranges across activism, science, politics, business, engineering, medicine, technology, food, arts, entertainment, beauty, and more, offering heroes for each.” - front inside cover
You can pick this book up, open to any page, and discover greatness.
Richard Pryor - the known to Cato Alexander, the ‘unknown’
The book is beautifully designed and illustrated. Keep it out so you can pick it up and open to any page to learn about someone in history/making history.
THAT’S IT Y’ALL - see ya here next Sunday at 3p CT
