Things discovered in real life and online that you may like too.
A FASCINATING WOMAN
I spent some time researching A’Lelia Bundles for a video. The video was was only 50+ seconds which forced me to leave out so much.
I found her to be super interesting so I wanted to share more things about her here.
You can check out the video here.
A’Lelia (sounds like Amelia but with an L) is the great great granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker.
Here are 7 things that didn’t make the video
1. Madam C.J. Walker’s daughter was Lelia Walker. After Madam C.J. Walker passed away she added an A - A’Lelia.
2. A’Lelia Walker is A’Lelia Bundles great-grandmother - here’s the family breakdown
- Madam C.J. Walker had A’Lelia Walker
- A’Lelia Walker adopted Fairy Mae Walker
- Fairy Mae Walker had A’Lelia Mae Perry
- A’Lelia Mae Perry had A’Lelia BUNDLES
here’s a visual in case you’re like me…..
3. A’Lelia Bundles is working on a new book about A’Lelia Walker - she titled the book ‘The Joy Goddess of Harlem’ because that is what Langston Hughes used to call her great-grandmother.
4. She worked for 30 years as a producer with NBC news and ABC news
5. When her advisor (Phyllis Garland) told her she should write about Madam C.J. Walker she said the timing was such that she had an opportunity to get permission from her mother who was terminally ill.
She told her mother she was advised to write about Madam C.J. Walker but she was concerned about sharing family information.
“Tell the truth baby. It’s alright to tell the truth.” - her mother
That freed her up to write the books.
6. Madam C.J. Walker’s estate was purchased by Richelieu Dennis because he wants to create a ‘think tank’ for Black women entrepreneurs.
7. She encourages all of us to learn and know our family history. She says knowing her family history is what gave her the power to be an activist.
“If we know who we are it will help us soar and understand what our mission in life really is.”
THAT’S IT Y’ALL - see ya here next Sunday at 3p CT
