from my adoptive mother -
clean as you go when cooking
wash the dishes with the hottest water your hands can stand + be generous with the dishwashing liquid
wipe down all sinks after you finish using them - leave it dry vs water everywhere
fold clothes when they are hot out the dryer
let it be known when you have a good cup of coffee (“Ahhhhh now THAT’S a good cup of coffee.”)
how to put on a jacket with a long sleeve shirt without the shirt’s sleeves rolling up in the damn jacket (tip: hold the sleeve in your hand while putting on jacket)
put on baby oil fresh out the shower (I have done this the majority of my life - I swapped out baby oil some years back for coconut oil)
buy good laundry soap even when times are hard - we just will not do generic (we used Tide or Cheers)
working hard - we chopped cotton, we cleaned houses, we cleaned motels, I was a dishwasher at jobs where she was the cook, we ran food trucks in questionable neighborhoods - this was before they were cool, we sold at flea markets all over Texas, on and On and ON…
make a sample - whenever she was baking a cake she always made a tiny ‘sample cake’ so we could see how it was going to taste and make necessary changes.
BONUS - help people
from my biological mother…
ASK FOR HELP - she kept asking the babysitter / her friend to watch me ‘one more time’ - that babysitter became my adoptive mother.
I am far from mastering this lesson but I so happy she knew to do it!
